The Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Yakima  and the Members of the Corporation are pleased to announce the appointment of Darlene Darnell as President and CEO of Catholic Charities, effective April 1, 2016.

“I’m very pleased that Darlene has accepted this appointment,” said Bishop Joseph Tyson of the Diocese of Yakima, who leads the Board of Members. “Her deep knowledge of Catholic teaching and outstanding record of service with the agency will help maintain and grow the work of Catholic Charities.”

Darlene succeeds John Young, who retired December 31 after 19 years of service. She has 31 years of history with Catholic Charities.  She began working for Catholic Family & Child Service in 1985 as a mental health therapist and soon thereafter moved into the role of clinical director.

She was appointed director of the Yakima Catholic Family & Child Service agency in 1996.  In 2003, she took on the responsibility of overseeing the entire Catholic Family & Child Service network with office locations in Yakima, Wenatchee, and the Tri-Cities.  Darlene was appointed vice president of Catholic Charities by the Board of Trustees and the Members of the Corporation 2009.

Darlene comes to this position with a great deal of knowledge and experience in leadership and management in the agency’s mental health, early learning, and social service programs.  In her role as Catholic Charities president and CEO, she will also serve as president of Catholic Charities Housing Services and the St. Vincent Centers.

“In 1985, when we first hired Darlene Darnell, we knew we had found a really gifted person: intelligent, well educated, skilled in mental health treatment, interested in working with families (as well as with individuals), and a woman with a truly good heart,” said the Very Rev. Thomas Champoux, chairman of the Board of
Trustees.  “Darlene has continued to grow in her long service with us, and we were delighted when she
accepted this appointment.”

“I am privileged and honored to take on the role as President and CEO of Catholic Charities,” stated Darlene. “Catholic Charities has a long-standing mission to serve those most in need within our Central Washington communities.  Through our services, we can extend the love of Christ to those who are hurting, alone, and many times have nowhere else to turn.”
